Appropriate Luggage for a Kenya Safari Trip

First time Kenya safari holiday makers may find it nerve wrecking to pack for their holiday. One can never know what to expect on a Kenya safari if one has not been on one before. One example is the amount of luggage to take.

It is not only for the convenience of the tourists to take on smaller luggage but it is also part of the airline’s restriction. Most airlines to Kenya would allow a maximum of 2 pieces of 23kg luggage per person. Other countries in Africa such as Tanzania may differ in their restriction.

It is advisable to take on lighter luggage loads as heavy luggage may prove cumbersome with the high volume of travelling in and out of hotels to other parts of Kenya safaris. There are also light aircraft flights which tourists must take on to get into the interiors of some Kenya safari reserves. This is where each Kenya safari tourist would be restricted to only 15kg which should be in some soft duffel bag or backpack. Hard sided luggage is not acceptable on the small light aircraft as the baggage compartment is very limited in size.

Luggage in 4-wheel drives or coaches from airports to the hotels is not restricted as there is usually sufficient luggage space with a luggage trailer although Kenya safari tourists are advised to travel light. There would be other tourists in one transfer vehicle and heavy luggage might slow the journey or weigh the transport vehicle down over the rough terrains in Kenya.

Excess luggage

If the tourist had over packed and does not want to lug the heavy luggage around, there is always the airport luggage compartment or Safari lounge outside Nairobi for public use. There are complimentary light refreshments in the comfortable seating area as well as bathroom and shower facilities.

Hotels where tourists put up for the night also provide luggage storage areas where tourists can store if they were coming back the same way on their return trip from the safari reserves.

Types of luggage

There may be certain types of luggage which any tourist visiting a Kenya safari should consider. This would include light cotton clothing which is comfortable and casual for the long journeys to and fro Kenya safari and hotel.

Most places of stay do not exercise any strict dress code as long as guests are presentable. A piece of warm clothing is recommended due to the changes in weather.
